About Connecticut Criminal History

Connecticut criminal records are split among several state and local systems. Connecticut SPBI maintains the statewide criminal history repository. The Judicial Branch holds Superior Court case files, the Connecticut Department of Correction maintains custody information, and the Connecticut Sex Offender Registry publishes eligible registrations. Municipal and state police agencies keep the reports they create. We built this private reference site to make those lines clearer and to route readers to the right official system or locality without treating Connecticut's historical counties as active county governments.

Why We Built This Site

Finding a Connecticut record starts with knowing who created it. Connecticut SPBI compiles reported arrests and dispositions into statewide criminal history products. The Judicial Branch manages the unified Superior Court system. CT DOC tracks people held in Connecticut's unified correctional system, including many pretrial detainees as well as sentenced prisoners. The registry is administered through DESPP. Police reports stay with the municipal, state, campus, tribal, or other authorized police agency that made them. Connecticut abolished county government and county sheriffs, so a generic instruction to contact a county clerk or sheriff would send readers to an office that does not exist. The locality directory instead connects all 27 project areas to the relevant local context while keeping statewide records routed to their actual custodians.

Only the official custodian, such as Connecticut SPBI, a Superior Court clerk, CT DOC, or the police agency that created a report, can issue or certify its record.
